What is the Endoscopic Left Auricular Appendage closure

Endoscopic treatment for closure of the left atrial appendage is a surgery that uses minimally invasive techniques to close the entrance of this small pouch in patients with Atrial Fibrillation.

Description of the procedure

The Endoscopic Treatment for Closure of the Left Auricle Appendix is a surgery that aims to close the entrance to the atrium, thus preventing blood flow to this region and the formation of clots.

Access to the auricle is made through three small incisions between the ribs. Subsequently, an insufflation with CO2 is performed and a polyester clip is placed at the entrance of the appendix, the so-called Atriclip®, completely closing the passage. The procedure is entirely accompanied by successive transesophageal echocardiograms, which verify the shape, functioning, and closure of the appendix and also certify the absence of blood leaks at the end of the surgical procedure.

This procedure has been very successful in the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation and, as it uses minimally invasive techniques, it allows rapid recovery to the patient, returning to daily activities 7 days after the intervention.

The patient does not need to take more anticoagulant drugs and, consequently, does not need to undergo periodic exams to check the Prothrombin Time (PT), which guarantees more freedom to practice physical activities, thus guaranteeing a significant gain in their quality of life.

The risks of infection and bleeding are minimal, with less pain and no postoperative changes.
The duration of an endoscopic left atrial appendage closure surgery is normally 100 minutes. Patients are discharged after 1-2 days.
Regarding work activity, after XX days the patient will be able to return to work. Normally, full mobility recovery is at the end of XX and moderate physical activity at XX.
