WHAT IS MINI STERNOTOMY AORTIC SURGERY?
Aortic surgery by mini sternotomy (aortic aneurysm correction) is indicated when the dilation is more than 5cm long. Depending on the condition of the aortic valve, replacement may be necessary. The procedure is performed using minimally invasive techniques.
Description of the procedure
At the start of the procedure, a mini-sternotomy about 8 centimeters long will be made, where the clipping equipment will be inserted into the front and back of the aneurysm. A small camera, which generates very high definition images, is then inserted to give the surgeon a wide view.
A prosthesis, usually made of dacron, will be placed at the site of the dilation and the necessary anastomoses will be made. In some cases it is necessary to remove the coronary arteries and, after the procedures, re-implant them, the so-called Bentall operation.
If the aortic valve has problems due to the aneurysm or degeneration, it will be replaced with a mechanical or biological prosthesis, according to parameters such as age, the presence of other diseases and other medical guidelines.
The use of the minimally invasive approach means that the average hospital stay is 5 days. With less pain and discomfort, the patient can return to their daily activities in a short time.
The presence of an aneurysm in the ascending aorta brings significant changes to a person's life, such as restrictions on more intense aerobic activities, heavy lifting and the use of various control medications. After the surgery and the adaptation period, you will be free to do more activities, you will breathe better, you will no longer have chest pain and you will regain your quality of life.
The duration of a mini sternotomy aortic surgery is around 120 minutes. Patients are discharged after 4 to 6 days in hospital.
They are expected to return to work after 3 weeks of rest. Moderate physical activity, on the other hand, can take place one month after surgery, in a regular situation and without any extraordinary occurrences.
