What is interaural communication?
Interauricular communication (IAC) is a congenital malformation in which there is a small hole between the right and left auricles, which allows blood to pass between these two regions. This opening usually closes spontaneously by the age of two.
The diagnosis is made during the consultation, when the doctor hears a characteristic noise on auscultation of the heart, also called a murmur or murmur. Confirmation is made after tests such as an electrocardiogram, echocardiogram and X-ray.
Children usually don't show symptoms, but if the passage is large, there is a risk of developing pulmonary hypertension and the formation of blood clots, which have serious consequences when they are released into the bloodstream.
Manifestations usually appear in adulthood, from the age of 30, and if the ASD is not closed, life expectancy will be compromised by heart failure or complications caused by the presence of clot obstructions, such as stroke.
What are the symptoms of interaural communication?
The main symptoms of interauricular communication are:
Sweating in the legs, abdomen, and feet
Shortness of breath, especially during exercise
Palpitations
Atrial fibrillation
Catheter treatment
It is a minimally invasive surgical technique that is recommended to be performed during childhood, thus avoiding complications during growth and adulthood. For cases where the size of the opening varies between small and medium. The development of minimally invasive techniques and prostheses for closing the communication has revolutionized the way this paediatric surgery is performed.
Mini invasive and robotic surgery
It is an ear closure surgery performed using minimally invasive procedures.
