  • Professor Doutor Javier Gallego Poveda

    Endoscopic Left Auricular Appendage Closure

WHAT IS ENDOSCOPIC LEFT EAR APPENDAGE CLOSURE?

Endoscopic treatment to close the left atrial appendage is a surgery that uses minimally invasive techniques to close the entrance to this small sac in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Description of the procedure

Endoscopic Treatment for Closure of the Left Auricular Appendage is a surgery that aims to close the entrance to the auricle, thus preventing blood flow to this region and the formation of clots.

The auricle is accessed through three small incisions between the ribs. Afterwards, CO2 insufflation is carried out and a polyester clip is placed at the entrance to the appendix, the so-called Atriclip®, completely closing off the passage. The procedure is fully accompanied by successive transesophageal echocardiograms, which check the shape, function and closure of the appendix and also certify that there are no blood leaks at the end of the surgical intervention.

This procedure has been highly successful in treating atrial fibrillation and, because it uses minimally invasive techniques, allows the patient to recover quickly and return to daily activities within 7 days of the intervention.

The patient no longer needs to take anticoagulant medication and consequently no longer needs to undergo periodic examinations to check their Prothrombin Time (PT), which guarantees more freedom to practice physical activities, thus ensuring a significant gain in their quality of life.

What are the risks of surgery?

The risks of infection and bleeding are minimal, with less pain and no changes in the post-operative period.

What is the length of hospitalization and discharge?

The duration of endoscopic left atrial appendage closure surgery is usually 100 minutes. Patients are discharged after 1-2 days.
As far as work activity is concerned, after 7 days the patient can return to work. Full mobility is usually restored after 1 week and moderate physical activity after 2 weeks.
