    Percutaneous Left Auricular Appendage Closure

WHAT IS PERCUTANEOUS LEFT ATRIAL APPENDAGE CLOSURE?

The Left Auricular Appendage Closure is a medical procedure performed using minimally invasive techniques and is the result of extensive studies carried out in the main internationally recognized cardiology centers. Through the development of specific techniques and materials, it represents the most modern and innovative treatment for atrial fibrillation.

Description of the procedure

During this procedure, the occlusion of this area is performed by placing a prosthesis at its opening. The indication for this procedure is made by the doctor, taking into account the patient’s physical condition and the progression of treatment through medication, as it is an option for those who experience complications with traditional approaches.

The main advantages of this procedure are:

  Minimally invasive procedure.
Quick recovery and return to daily activities.
Reduction of up to 85% in the likelihood of stroke occurrence.
Elimination of the need for medications and constant coagulation factor monitoring tests.
Reduced risk of hemorrhages caused by the use of anticoagulant medications.

In Atrial Fibrillation, most clots form in the LAA (Left Atrial Appendage), which resembles a small pouch. With an average duration of two hours, the closure or occlusion is performed through a femoral puncture, where a catheter is guided to the entrance of the LAA. A device is then installed, preventing existing clots or those in formation from entering the bloodstream.

As the procedure is performed using minimally invasive techniques, recovery is quick. After being discharged, you will need to follow a series of medical recommendations and periodically undergo exams to monitor the progress of your treatment.

What is the length of hospitalization and discharge?

The duration of a percutaneous left atrial appendage closure surgery is usually 100 minutes. Patients are discharged after 1 day.
As far as work activity is concerned, after 7 days the patient can return to work. Full mobility is usually restored after 1 week and moderate physical activity after 2 weeks.
