WHAT IS ENDOSCOPIC ATRIAL FIBRILLATION TREATMENT?
Endoscopic treatment of atrial fibrillation or Hybrid Ablation is a surgical procedure for the treatment of severe atrial fibrillation. It is recommended for patients who have frequent episodes of arrhythmia where conventional ablation and the use of medication are not effective in controlling or stopping these occurrences.
Description of the procedure
Endoscopic treatment of atrial fibrillation is done through minimally invasive procedures in cardiac surgery centers. In the first stage of the procedure, the points where regular and irregular electrical impulses are generated are mapped. This mapping is also called an electrophysiological study.
Once the points have been identified, a catheter with a small chamber at its end is inserted into the femoral artery and guided to the left atrium. Another catheter with radiofrequency, laser or intense cold generation devices will be introduced through small incisions made between the patient's ribs.
The surgeon will create small scars that will serve as barriers or bypasses that will impede the path of the random electrical impulses. Sometimes, the electrophysiological study shows that there are irregular points that are close to the pulmonary veins. In these cases, the pair or just one of the veins is electrically isolated.
The length of stay in hospital will be two to three days. The doctor will prescribe a series of instructions for the patient to follow after discharge.
Recent medical studies published in the United States and Europe, based on the collection of data obtained during the follow-up of patients who underwent Endoscopic Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation more than three years ago, confirm the success of this procedure. Patients are freed from the use of medication and clinical admissions to control episodes, and can return to physical activity and enjoy life to the full.
As the incisions are small, the risk of infection and bleeding is minimal.
The duration of endoscopic atrial fibrillation treatment is usually 150 minutes. Patients are discharged after 1-2 days.
As far as work activity is concerned, after 7 days the patient can return to work. Full mobility is usually restored after 1 week and moderate physical activity after 2 weeks.
