WHAT IS CATHETER TREATMENT

It is a minimally invasive surgical technique that is recommended to be performed during childhood, thus avoiding complications during growth and adulthood. For cases where the size of the opening varies between small and medium. The development of minimally invasive techniques and prostheses for closing the communication has revolutionized the way this paediatric surgery is performed.

Description of the procedure

A thin catheter is inserted into the femoral artery near the child's groin and guided to the ear region. The interventional cardiologist will have a wide view of all the stages of the procedure via large monitors in the operating room. A second catheter will be inserted with a prosthesis attached to its end, which will be positioned and released over the opening so that it can be occluded.

After the surgery, in the healing stage, fibrous tissue will cover the prosthesis, thus preventing possible leaks. The child will undergo regular cardiac tests and then visits to the cardiologist will be annual.

What are the risks of surgery?

The hospitalization period is short and the scarring is minimal, reducing the risk of infection. The child will develop normally, will be able to practise physical activities according to the doctor's instructions and will not have the complications that this problem causes in adults, thus living a full and quality life.

What is the length of hospitalization and discharge?

The duration of catheter treatment is usually X minutes. Patients are discharged after X days.
With regard to work activity, after XX days the patient can return to work. Normally, full recovery of mobility is at the end of XX and moderate physical activity at XX.
