WHAT IS ENDOSCOPIC NUSS SURGERY
Technological developments have allowed the endoscopic technique used to treat pectus excavatum to become less invasive - Nuss surgery.
Description of the procedure
It is a minimally invasive surgery with a small lateral incision where a customized prosthesis is inserted to correct the thoracic deformity.
During the procedure, a 2 cm incision is made in the lateral chest wall, in the axillary midline following a line from the deepest point of the sternum depression. Through this small lateral incision, a customized prosthesis is inserted, ordered from a specialized company that designs and manufactures the pectus excavatum correction plate for each patient according to their morphology.
Through a preoperative chest CT scan, the i3DExcavatum system is able to determine the best chest plane for inserting the prosthesis and customize the size and morphology of the prosthesis best suited to each patient.
The prosthesis customized by the i3DExcavatum system has a smooth curvature and fits the patient's deformity perfectly, which ensures an even distribution of the forces needed to raise the sternum above the ribs. These characteristics allow for less discomfort for the patient in the immediate postoperative period.
After the prosthesis has been inserted, in a minimally invasive way and under endoscopic vision, the incision is closed with an intradermal suture which has excellent aesthetic results.
The duration of endoscopic Nuss surgery is usually 60 minutes and patients are discharged after 2 to 3 days.
