He began performing minimally invasive surgery for anatomical resections (VATS) in 2007, after learning the technique at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles with Dr. Rob McKenna. After performing more than 100 lung resections using the three-incision technique, he visited the Duke Medical Center in North Carolina to learn the double-incision technique with Dr. Thomas D’Amico. Once he gained experience with this method, he advanced lung surgery by developing the intervention through a single incision.
He was the pioneering surgeon worldwide to perform uniportal anatomical resections by VATS (first case in June 2010), single-incision lung surgery on patients without intubation and with spontaneous breathing (first case in April 2014), and also a forerunner in performing uniportal resections using an articulated robotic arm without the need for an assistant (first case in 2016). He is also a specialist in uniportal resections through the subxiphoid or subcostal space (without invading the intercostal space) and in pulmonary, broncho-vascular, and carina or tracheal reconstructions using minimally invasive uniportal surgery.
He has published over 100 scientific papers in leading international journals, describing these procedures and their outcomes. Additionally, he has edited several scientific books and published numerous chapters in various treaties and atlases of thoracic surgery.
A foundation created with the purpose of saving lives, with a special focus on developing countries and the fight against lung cancer and pain through the minimally invasive techniques pioneered by Dr. Diego González Rivas. The foundation seeks to bring these techniques worldwide, enabling faster recovery.
Guided by the motto: “Impossible is nothing” and the values of commitment, solidarity, excellence, and transparency, the mission of the Diego González Rivas Foundation is to increase life expectancy, alleviate pain, improve disease diagnoses such as cancer, and provide treatment through the innovative Uniportal VATS technique developed by Dr. Diego González Rivas.
