WHAT IS BOTULINUM TOXIN?
Botulinum toxin is an injectable compound used to temporarily treat hyperhidrosis in the armpits, feet, palms, skull and face.
Description of the procedure
These injections block the action of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine, which, after receiving impulses from one or more ganglia of the Sympathetic Nerve, stimulates the production of sweat by the sweat glands.
The duration of the treatment depends on the area of the body where it is carried out, but the average time is between 6 and 8 months. Areas of the face and scalp require special care and the injections should be applied by a specialized doctor, thus avoiding accidental injury to essential muscles or nerves.
The applications are superficial and are made in delimited areas, usually up to 2 cm in length. The injections are repeated several times until the area is completely covered.
To reduce any discomfort, a local anesthetic is used beforehand.
The results are not immediate. Gradually, the patient will notice a decrease in sweat production and within 5 days the full benefits of the treatment will be felt. Over time, these injections will lose their action and new applications will be necessary.
The application of botulinum toxin usually lasts 20 minutes, without the need for hospitalization or interruption of daily activities.
