WHAT IS PECTUS CARINATUM SURGERY?

The surgery to correct Pectus Carinatum through minimally invasive approaches uses the Abramson Technique, which has been adopted for years in major international Thoracic Surgery reference centers and has a high success rate.

Description of the procedure

After the patient's physical assessments, a Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) scan will be carried out to assess the severity of the Pectus and make an anatomical study with measurements for the preparation of the bars that will be used in the surgery.

The patient will also be tested for metal allergies.
The surgery is performed through three bilateral incisions of 3 centimeters each. Small resections are made in the rib bones and titanium plates are attached. Three metal bars are then placed transversely to compress the sternum and are attached to the plates.

The results are immediate and after three years another surgery will be performed, also with small incisions and minimally invasive techniques, to remove the bars. The recovery period is around seven days, when the patient can gradually resume normal activities.

The scars are small and the recovery is quick. There is a significant improvement in quality of life, mainly due to overcoming psychological and self-esteem problems.

Some patients also suffer from other diseases such as asthma and scoliosis. Pectus is the generic name for congenital deformities that occur in the anterior chest wall. The causes of these alterations are still being studied, but they may be associated with genetic diseases such as Marfan Syndrome.
