WHAT IS MITRACLIP
It is a non-surgical procedure that uses minimally invasive techniques to correct Mitral Valve Insufficiency, which is one of the main causes of sudden death. It is a safe option, with equally positive results to those obtained by conventional surgery and is indicated for patients who cannot undergo surgery and whose treatment is restricted to the use of medication, which alleviates the symptoms but has no effect on the cause of the disease.
Description of the procedure
The diagnosis is made through cardiac auscultation, where the doctor identifies a specific sound, also called a murmur or murmur. An echocardiogram is one of the resources used to analyze the movements of the mitral valve using color Doppler. Cardiac catheterization will check the functioning of the ventricle and identify whether there is coronary disease aggravating the condition.
Conventional surgery by opening the chest, or surgery using minimally invasive surgical techniques, allows the heart to be temporarily paralyzed in order to install a cardiopulmonary bypass circuit and replace or repair the valve. Some patients, however, cannot undergo this surgery due to the high degree of risk. In these cases, according to medical assessment and recommendation, Mitraclip is the procedure of choice.
This technique allows a clamp, specially developed for the mitral valve, to be taken to the patient's heart via a catheter. When it reaches the mitral valve, it joins the two valves at the bottom, allowing blood reflux into the ventricle to decrease or even cease completely.
The duration of a mitraclip operation is usually 120 minutes. Patients are discharged after 1-2 days.
As far as work activity is concerned, after 1 week the patient can return to work. Normally, full mobility is restored after 1 week and moderate physical activity after 2 weeks.
