The treatment indicated for Aortic Stenosis and Regurgitation is to perform an open chest surgery, where the old valve will be replaced by a new one. Sometimes, however, the patient’s condition deteriorates rapidly and they are very fragile or have other conditions that make the surgical risk extremely high. For these cases, the indication is the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implant or TAVI.
All cases are discussed at a Heart Team meeting in which Interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons evaluate each patient to decide what will be the best approach for him and what is the least invasive way to have a faster recovery.
During TAVI, a catheter is introduced through a small puncture into the femoral artery of the groin. At the tip of the catheter, there is a small balloon that will be guided to the heart. Arriving at the bottom, it is inflated, thus creating space for the exchange. A biological valve with a stent is placed in another catheter and is positioned over the old one. After the overlap, the new valve will start working immediately, allowing the opening and closing movements to be carried out in their entirety.
