What is the Mitraclip

It is a non-surgical procedure that uses minimally invasive techniques to correct Mitral Valve Insufficiency, which is one of the main causes of sudden death. It is a safe option, with equally positive results to those obtained by conventional surgery, and is indicated for patients who cannot undergo the surgical procedure and whose treatment is restricted to the use of drugs, which attenuate the symptoms but have no effect on the cause. of the disease.

Description of the procedure

The diagnosis is made through cardiac auscultation, where the doctor identifies a specific sound, also called a heart murmur. The echocardiogram is one of the resources used to analyze the movements of the mitral valve through color Doppler. Cardiac catheterization will check the functioning of the ventricle in addition to identifying whether there is a presence of coronary disease, aggravating the condition.

Conventional surgery with opening the chest or surgery with minimally invasive surgical techniques, allows the temporary stoppage of the heart for the installation of the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit and valve replacement or repair. Some patients, however, cannot undergo this surgery, due to the high degree of risk. In these cases, according to medical evaluation and recommendation, Mitraclip is the indicated procedure.

This technique allows a clip, developed especially for the mitral valve, to be brought to the patient’s heart through a catheter. Upon reaching the mitral valve, it will unite the two valves at the bottom, allowing the blood reflux to the ventricle to decrease or even stop completely.

The duration of a mitraclip surgery is normally 120 minutes. Patients are discharged after 1-2 days.
Regarding work activity, after XX days the patient will be able to return to work. Normally, full mobility recovery is at the end of XX and moderate physical activity at XX.
